FAQ

WHEN DOES A HAIR TRANSPLANT MAKE SENSE?

A hair transplant is particularly suitable for patients with hereditary hair loss. A correction of various issues ranging from a slight loss of hair (receding hairline) to treating baldness on the top of the head is possible. Hair transplants are also suited for the correction of scars and in some cases even for the reconstruction of burned out scarring scalp diseases. In special cases a reconstruction of eye brows and beard is also possible.

IS A HAIR TRANSPLANT PAINFUL?

The treatment is carried out under local anaesthesia. During surgery, the patient feels no pain. In the first night following surgery, a slight wound pain in the donor area may occur. You will be given efficacious drugs for the first days following the hair transplant.

WHAT IS THE DAY OF THE SURGERY LIKE?

After the administration of local anaesthesia the donor hair is extracted. All grafts will be controlled and processed under the microscope. After all the grafts Haare harvested, the recipient site is prepared. After that platelet rich plasma will be administered followed by graft placement. Unlike in most hair transplant clinics Dr. Otberg is placing every graft herself.

Throughout the day the patient can take breaks, gets a lunch and is allowed to watch TV or listen to music or podcasts.

HOW LONG DOES A HAIR TRANSPLANT TAKE?

A hair transplant may take, depending on the number of transplanted hairs, 3 – 10 hours. Very large sessions can be carried out on two consecutive days.

HOW LONG WILL MY GRAFTED HAIR TAKE TO START GROWING?

About 1 – 4 weeks after the surgery, the grafted hair shafts will temporarily fall out again. The new hairs will start to grow 3 – 8 months surgery. A treatment with platelet-rich plasma can help to accelerate and improve the regrowth of the hairs.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SURGERY?

If the strip harvesting method is applied, the stitches are removed after 10 – 14 days. At that point, treatment with platelet-rich plasma will make sense. Likewise, following a follicular unit extraction, a follow-up visit also makes sense about a fortnight later. After a fortnight, the hair can once again be washed normally, and patients may also go to the hairdresser’s again.

HOW MUCH DOES A HAIR TRANSPLANT COST?

The cost of a hair transplant always depends on the number of grafts. Prices range from €3,000 – 10,000.
